English Language Learners (ELL)

The Sequim School District values English Learners. We believe our multilingual scholars are assets, enriching our student body and adding to our learning with languages, cultures, experiences, and unique perspectives. Our goal is to develop students’ English language proficiency to enable meaningful access to grade level curricula and instruction.

As of the 2020-2021 school year, students enrolled in the English Language Learner Program will receive services delivered using the supportive mainstream model in which English language and content will be taught collaboratively by the classroom teacher and the ELL teacher. Services will be provided to emerging and developing English Learners as they work toward English language proficiency.

Sequim School District follows Washington state procedure by:

  • Identifying English Learners using the Home Language Survey and WIDA Screener
  • Providing English instruction to eligible students using the supportive mainstream model
  • Assessing growth in English proficiency annually using WIDA Access or WIDA Alternate Access for some English Learners with disabilities
  • Monitoring students’ academic progress for two years after reaching English proficiency to ensure success
