COBRA

Your rights to COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) and continued medical coverage:

If you are an exiting employee of Sequim School District or you have a qualifying event that has changed your employment or dependent medical coverage, you have the right to continue insurance benefits with our group under certain circumstances. As a former employee, the law states that you may continue insurance with our group for up to 18 months. Qualifying events other than separation are as follows:

Allowable Changes in Medical Coverage

After the open enrollment period has expired, changes will only be allowed if there is a qualifying event as defined under Section 125.  Qualifying events include:

  • Marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, legal separation or annulment;
  • Change in the number of dependents, including birth, adoption, placement for adoption, or death of a dependent;
  • One of your dependent's satisfies or ceases to satisfy the requirements for coverage;
  • Any change in employment status that affects eligibility for benefits for you, your spouse or dependent;
  • A significant change in the place of residence for you, your spouse or dependent;
  • If coverage under your spouse's, former spouse's or dependent's employer is more cost effective to enroll under that employer's plan during their open enrollment.

Proof of such qualifying event and a corresponding enrollment or waiver form must be provided to the payroll office by the 10th of the month prior to the coverage month affected by such a change.

With COBRA rights, you may continue your coverage through your group’s current medical policy. You may not add family members if not covered while working here. COBRA coverage can be dropped at any time.

The rates for COBRA coverage change from year to year. Current rates are available at the SEBB Continuation of Coverage website.
