Reopening Plan 2020-21 explained by Supt. Dr. Rob Clark

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A unanimous decision was made by the School Board at the August 3 regular meeting to approve a limited hybrid model to start the 2020-2021 school year.
Details about what this means for your family will be shared in the next week.
The recordings of the Board Workshop and Regular Board meeting are below.

From the Board Meeting: Hybrid model (AABB) with approximately 200 kids (100AA, 100BB). This is roughly 25 per building. OPA would start one day a week for K-5 and one day for 6-12 (all students). They typically only attend two days a week, so this will not be much of a change. We will follow the recommendations from OSPI and prioritize face-to-face services for students most impacted by the loss of in-person services. Criteria for these students will be established. We have a legal obligation to educate these children and many of them cannot be educated at home. All teaching staff will be in the buildings and expected to follow all Health and Safety Protocols. Social distancing and participant size of meetings guidelines will be established, and measures strictly followed.

All other students will receive virtual instruction from their teachers. The parameters of this will be worked out over the next four weeks. Continuous Learning 2.0 will be described and implemented over the next few weeks.

Opportunities for students to meet their teachers either virtually or in person will be set up. If meetings are in person social distancing protocol will be maintained.

Any student who desired full virtual instruction would be given that opportunity. This may be done through class-room instruction or Dungeness Virtual School. (DVS)

Meals will be provided to all students in a model that will be publicized.

Successful operation of this model (2-3 weeks) will generate more students on campus. This also assumes COVID cases are continuing at a rate that is acceptable to Dr. Unthank and ourselves.

The next round of students would be K-1 students at the elementary, 6th grade students in the Middle School, and 9th grade students in the High School. It would continue to be the Hybrid AABB Model.

The rotation would continue if benchmarks continue to be met.

Positive Rationale:

  • This would give the district a chance to fine-tune Health and Safety protocols
  • We would meet our legal obligation for special education
  • This would honor the Social Justice statement the district adopted earlier this summer
  • This would establish a path to further enable students to come to our buildings for face-to-face teaching
  • It would allow for fewer layoffs (there probably would still be some)
  • This is a manageable plan
  • Manages the restriction of COVID-19

**Updated**
The most recent Family Follow up communication that was sent via Skyward and posted on the website, reflects the criteria OSPI has required each school district to have a detailed plan in place before reopening school. Information about each learning model was shared at a virtual Community Forum July 8. The video is located on this main page right below.
The school board will review recommendations from the Back to School Task Force at the board meeting August 3.

July 29, 2020

Sequim School District families,

Thank you to all of you who have inquired what we are doing in the fall as far as school learning models. We hope the information below helps you make the best decision for your family.
In school learning- Students will attend their regular school and class(es) in school buildings. The In-school options were discussed on the Community Forum. You can view the  Community Forum here or on our Sequim School District YouTube channel if you were unable to attend.

Remote learning- Students remain enrolled in their neighborhood school and are connected to their classroom teacher online/remotely. Packets/Assignments will be provided by their classroom teacher and will keep students on pace with building curriculum. Teachers will provide support and check-in with their students.
Online learning- Students enroll in Dungeness Virtual School with courses being provided by Odysseyware. (Grades 3-12)

Online learning, through Dungeness Virtual School, will not be an option for students K-2.  All remote learning for students in Grades K-2 will be provided directly by our elementary schools.  The Sequim School District believes that keeping our Kindergarten through Grade 2 students directly connected to their classroom teacher, whether through in-class or remote learning, is especially important during this foundational learning time.  All buildings will provide remote learning for students in Grades K-12.  However, if your family would prefer, you can instead sign up your 3rd-12th grade child for 100% online school at Dungeness Virtual School.

Each of these are good options.  We want to share all the information we can to ensure each of you can make the choice that is best for your family. The decisions we make today, about our students and their education, will make an impact on our students, schools and district.  Please call with any questions 360-582-3260, it is our goal to see your students in person or remotely, the first week of September.
