Eighth-grade students at Sequim Middle School experienced a day they will not soon forget when a United States Coast Guard helicopter landed right on campus, transforming an ordinary school day into an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience.
Students gathered as the aircraft approached and touched down on school grounds, watching in real time as a Coast Guard helicopter became part of their campus. The excitement on the field quickly turned into curiosity as students were invited to take part in up-close tours, explore the aircraft, and capture photos to remember the moment. For many, it was their first time seeing a helicopter of this kind up close, making the experience both thrilling and eye-opening.
The learning continued beyond the aircraft itself as students had the opportunity to meet and talk with the Coast Guard crew. Students asked questions about training, daily responsibilities, and what it means to serve in the United States Coast Guard. These conversations gave students a meaningful glimpse into careers that combine aviation, service, and public safety.
What made the experience even more special was a unique connection within the SMS community. Sequim Middle School teacher Christina Clark’s husband serves in the Coast Guard and was part of the visiting crew. The day before the helicopter landing, he also spoke to all 8th grade English Language Arts classes, sharing his career path, experiences, and insights into life in the Coast Guard. This connection helped students see a real-world link between classroom learning and future possibilities.
