The Department of Justice (DOJ) has introduced the School Student Problem Identification and Resolution of Issues Together (School-SPIRIT) program to Sequim School District, marking a significant initiative aimed at enhancing student leadership and community collaboration within local schools.
This Spring, approximately 100 students from Sequim Middle School and Sequim High School gathered for two half-days in the School-SPIRIT program. This initiative seeks to empower students by involving them directly in identifying and addressing issues affecting their school environment. School-SPIRIT is about empowering the students to actively participate in shaping their school communities, by starting dialogue and collaboration among students and educators, they aimed to create a more inclusive and supportive school environment.
A central aspect of the School-SPIRIT initiative is the establishment of student-led SPIRIT Councils within participating schools. These councils will work closely with school administrators to implement solutions developed during the program and strengthen the school's capacity to address future conflicts effectively.
