If a parent, caregiver, doctor, school employee, or anyone else has a concern about a child’s development or academic achievement, they may refer the student for screening. This includes children attending private school and home school settings.
Screening procedures shall include vision and hearing status and consideration of the following areas: cognitive or academic, communication, motor, social or behavioral, and adaptive development. Screenings may include observations, family interviews, review of medical, developmental, or educational records. Standardized assessments may also be used.

Preschool (Ages 3-5): The Sequim School District conducts evaluations for children who are three to five years old. Early Childhood Special Education(ECSE) services are available for children identified with a qualifying disability. Services may be delivered in a variety of settings including Sequim School District’s Developmental Preschool, Head Start, child care centers or community preschool. Special Education (Ages 5-21): Referrals may be initiated by parents, through educators and school staff, as well as community health professionals and caregivers. Contact the child’s school or Learning Support Services at (360) 582-3402. Parents may also send a written request for evaluation to the district’s special education department. Once initiated, an evaluation team, including parents, teachers, school psychologists and specialists, will determine the assessments needed through parent reports, academic evidence, teacher reports, file reviews and health reports. Parent permission is required for testing.
